Our History
Looking back we can see God’s Hand upon our Church. Looking forward we believe that same hand of Blessing and Guidance will rest upon this Church.
Christchurch Chinese Church began from a vision and heart to reach Chinese speakers in Christchurch with the Good News of salvation in Jesus. The first worship service was held in 1989. There were about 25 people that first Sunday and over the years, the Church has steadily grown to about 600 people today.
For the first 15 years, our Sunday Worship was held in rented Church buildings. Over those years we moved around five different church buildings, and also had four rented administrative centers. In 2003 we purchased an old YMCA Building at 286 Greers Rd. Bryndwr. We re-developed this building and moved into our new facilities in 2005.
The church began as one congregation; Mandarin/English, but over the years the Church has grown and we now have 4 congregations. Our church members are mostly Chinese from different nations, but gradually we are becoming more multi-cultural, with people from many diverse backgrounds and cultures.
In 2021 we took the big step to change our English name from Christchurch Chinese Church to Christchurch Community Church. The reason; to make our church more inclusive, and send a message to our community that we are a church for all people, no matter where you are from. This is God’s church and God welcomes all who will come to Him. Our Church, the Christchurch Community Church also welcomes all people. We welcome you!
We are an Independent, Modern, Christian Church, that Loves God, Honors His Word, Cares about this lost World, Preaches the Gospel of Jesus, and seeks to be empowered by the Holy Spirit for God’s Mission.
We sincerely welcome you to join us and hope you find our church to be a place where you can feel loved and where you can know more about Jesus, and serve together with us on God’s Great Mission to this Lost World.
